June 16th is World Youth Day and a cause for celebration in South Africa. This year the day fell on a Saturday. Youth and adults throughout the City of Cape Town saluted the future generation of leaders with a myriad of World Youth Day events.
I spent the day in Vuna Community Garden, a youth-led community garden project located in Langa, a township in Cape Town. Vuna means “harvest” in Xhosa. I learned about Vuna Community Garden through my Rooftops Canada internship placement. Working with the Urban Agriculture Unit of the City of Cape Town I am also attached to Abalimi Bezekhaya, a local urban food security and agriculture NGO.
Vuna is youth-driven and youth-focused. Its mandate, alongside growing organic vegetables, is to educate youth about HIV and AIDS, stimulate youth entrepreneurship and build social cohesion in Langa Township. As poverty, unemployment, HIV and AIDS, and crime have become part of young people’s lives in many parts of South Africa, projects like Vuna are timely and important.
Marking Youth Day with such a lively and motivated group of youth was truly inspiring. In addition to attending an HIV and AIDS prevention workshop, we learned about food security, healthy eating and nutrition and shared ideas on how to have successful gardens.

Like most things which deliver high value and positive outcomes, building a great estate with real
estate is a marathon. Tourism is a billion dollar industry in Hawaii, and revenues have never
been higher. A profit, the whole process of cost management concepts.
